cringe royale

Up to 99 strangers queue together. Every round, everyone writes something in sixty seconds, and the worst scores get erased. Last one standing wins.

buying an entry

Entry costs $1.99 and drops you into whichever queue is currently open. There's no way to choose who you play with or arrange a private game — it's open matchmaking with whoever else is around.

  1. Tap "enter" on the royale page. This opens Gumroad in a new tab.
  2. Find the entry key on your receipt.
  3. Paste it and hit "join the queue".

Right above the button is a live count of how many people are currently playing a royale, so you can see whether it's worth joining right now.

how the queue works

A new queue opens every five minutes. A game starts as soon as either of these happens:

  • the queue reaches 99 players, or
  • five minutes pass and there are at least 5 players waiting.
If fewer than 5 people are in the queue when the five minutes run out, the game is voided — and your entry is not spent. You're automatically eligible to join the next queue with the same purchase.

playing a round

Every round works the same way as a battle round, just with everyone still in the game at once: sixty seconds to write something, lock it in or let the buzzer submit whatever's in the box, and nobody sees anyone else's draft until the round closes.

the elimination rule

After each round, the three worst scores are eliminated. But there's a twist: if a fourth player is tied with the third-worst score, they're eliminated too — a tie right on the cut line takes everyone sitting on it, not just three people.

For example, say the five worst scores in a round of 20 players are 94, 90, 88, 88, 70. Normally the worst three would go — but the third-worst score, 88, is shared by two people. Both of them are eliminated along with the 94 and the 90, so four players go that round, not three. If literally everyone in the round scored exactly the same, nobody is eliminated at all; there has to be an actual worst to erase.

Not writing anything, or writing something that can't be judged, scores 100 — the maximum possible — so it's always among the first eliminated if anyone else wrote something.

between rounds

Once a round closes, everyone still in the game can see how many were eliminated, how many are left, your own score for that round, and — because that's the whole point of the game — the worst post of the round, shown in full. Don't write anything in a royale you wouldn't want a room full of strangers to read; that reveal is the entire mechanic.

winning

The last player standing gets CRINGE VICTORY ROYALE. Everyone eliminated along the way sees "BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME" with the round they went out in.

win streaks and the free entry

Win a game and your next entry is free — a button appears on your victory screen, and it's saved so it's still there if you come back later. Free entries carry a running streak: win again on a free entry and your streak climbs; lose, and it ends. A freshly bought entry always starts at zero, since there's no account to remember you by otherwise — the streak lives entirely in the chain of wins.

If the next game your free entry lands you in never fills up and voids, you don't lose the prize — the free entry is still good for the queue after that.

sharing a win streak

Winning shows a share card option: how many in a row, and — more interesting — your average cringe score across every round of every game in the streak, not just the game you just won. Same download / share sheet / social options as the screening result card.

the live player counter

Shown on the royale page and the home page. It's a genuine count of people currently in the game — if nobody's there, the line simply doesn't appear. It never shows a made-up number to make the site look busier than it is.
